We build consciousness, tools and capacities for efficient water use. We develop IRMA_SYS, a participatory DSS for efficient irrigation water management which is designed to cover extensive areas, with minimum or even no hardware requirements. We work to make this DSS the reference of its kind.
Problem/Opportunity
Improving irrigation efficiency in farming and landscaping projects is critical for saving both water and energy, as it directly reduces pumping and conveyance needs, lowers operational costs, minimizes environmental pollution and builds resilience against water scarcity driven by climate change.
Solution & Product
The proposed solution concerns a special version of IRMA_SYS that will provide irrigation recommendations for green spaces and sports areas, school gardens and crops and will calculate related environmental footprints. It will also have functions that will support citizen science actions.
Validation of Problem
In Greece 80% of water use concerns crop irrigation. Also, significant quantity of water is used to maintain urban landscapes. Irrigation is linked to energy consumption and relevant CO2 emissions.
Competition & Competitive Advantage
Almost all competitors base their solutions to meteorological stations and soil moisture sensors that are installed in each area to be irrigated. The installation of a minimum number of meteorological stations plus water volume meter can improve the accuracy of the irrigation recommendations that IRMA_SYS provides, but it could operate even without any sensor at the field. Also, the fact that our DSS provides summarised data to water managers allows them to spot and disseminate good practices.

Our team includes civil, survey, agricultural engineers, geologists and software developers, experts in hydrology, water resources management, irrigation and relevant environmental footprints calculation. We have already installed irrigation DSS’ that cover more than 50k ha and support many crops.
